Hurricanes are massive storms. A Category 3 hurricane might have tropical-storm-force winds extending 200 miles from the center. So even if the center of the storm passes north of you, you might still get significant wind and rain.
Think of the cone like a garden hose on a wide spray setting. The heaviest water hits the middle, but the spray still reaches far to the sides.
Hurricane Categories: What the Numbers Mean
When trackers show a storm’s intensity, they use the Saffir-Simpson scale from 1 to 5.
Category 1 (74–95 mph winds): Some damage to trees and roofs. Power outages possible.
Category 2 (96–110 mph): Major damage to trees, power likely out for days or weeks.
Category 3 (111–129 mph): Devastating damage. Most trees destroyed, electricity and water out for days.
Category 4 (130–156 mph): Catastrophic damage. Most houses lose roofs and walls.
Category 5 (157+ mph): Total destruction of most buildings. These are rare but real.
The category can change quickly. Hurricanes strengthen over warm water and weaken over land or cooler water, sometimes jumping two categories in a single day, a process called rapid intensification.

Check the NHC cone to see whether your area is in the probable path. But remember the cone’s edges are not safety lines.
Watch the spaghetti models to get a feel for forecast confidence. Tight lines mean more certainty. Spread-out lines mean stay alert even if your area looks outside the main path.
Track the category trend, is the storm strengthening or weakening as it approaches? A storm that weakens before landfall is better news than one that intensifies.
Look at timing, when is it expected to arrive? Most trackers show this clearly. Knowing whether landfall is 12 hours or 48 hours away changes what you do next.
