The official US standard rain gauge has a funnel that feeds into a narrow tube. Because the tube is narrower than the funnel, small amounts of rain get amplified into readable levels. A tenth of an inch of rain that would barely coat a plate becomes an easy-to-read column of water in the tube.
Hygrometer: The Humidity Tracker
A hygrometer measures how much water vapor is in the air, which we call humidity. High humidity makes 90-degree heat feel suffocating. Low humidity makes cold air feel even drier and sharper.
Humidity matters for forecasting because moist air is the fuel that thunderstorms run on. When a hygrometer shows high humidity and pressure is dropping, a meteorologist knows the ingredients for storms are in place.
How They Work Together
No single instrument tells the full story. That’s the point.
Temperature alone doesn’t tell you if it feels hot. Add humidity and you get the heat index. Add wind speed and you get windchill. Add barometric pressure and you can predict whether conditions will change in the next few hours.
